 Regarding the New York Times article I think it brings up a interesting topic. I myself overlook the very simple and effective signs that govern my travel. These signs are usually very clear in what they mean and offer little room for misinterpretations.
 Observing the sign criticized in the article shows very clearly that the sign is more of a distraction than an aid. And magnifies the importance of a good design that can save a little time and reassure a driver that horrible signs aren't coupled with stressful traffic jams.
