Regarding the New York Times article I think it brings up a interesting topic. I myself overlook the very simple and effective signs that govern my travel. These signs are usually very clear in what they mean and offer little room for misinterpretations.
Observing the sign criticized in the article shows very clearly that the sign is more of a distraction than an aid. And magnifies the importance of a good design that can save a little time and reassure a driver that horrible signs aren't coupled with stressful traffic jams.

8. As i rised from my feather-like bed, i glanced out the window and enjoyed the canvas that mother earth had painted for me. As i admired the snow-topped mountains in the distance with a forest dotting their hills and crevices, I thought to myself, " Another day o' work." I then calmly dressed in the proper attire for a cold climate, sipped some tea, ate some bread, picked up my axe and strolled out he cabin doors. Thwack, Thwack, Thwack...(an hour or two later), one down.
